What is Perimenopause?
Perimenopause is the transitional stage into menopause. It is the time when the ovaries begin decreasing their production of progesterone, while estrogen levels fluctuate drastically or run slightly high.
How Does This Affect You?
It starts with estrogen dominance symptoms around age 30 yrs old, causing irregular or heavy menstrual bleeding and leads up to symptoms of estrogen deficiency, where periods become lighter and visit less frequently until finally they stop all together. Most women in perimenopause can expect to have bloating, irritability, weight gain, breast tenderness, and possibly spotting and/or headaches.
The trouble is most patients can’t put their finger on what is really wrong or they won’t really put two and two together, so they suffer. It is often the 30-something and 40-something women that don’t even realize they have entered perimenopause and it goes un-treated.
Solutions, not Band-Aids
To treat perimenopause, some conventional doctors may prescribe an anti-depressant for mood, birth control pills or an intrauterine device (IUD) to normalize the menstrual cycle, and advise a patient to lose weight, after only a 5 or 10 minute meeting. Dr. Amy has found that conventional methods of treating perimenopausal symptoms, while neglecting the cause, just don’t work well. Instead, she spends the time needed to teaching all about this stage and what it entails so that the transition to menopause is a pleasant one (or at least a benign experience).
No one Ever Told Me It Would Be Like This!
Wouldn’t it be best if someone like Dr. Amy could take you and your group aside (as they did when you first learned about the birds and the bees) and explain what perimenopause is, why your body is changing, and develop a plan to address the cause? The Three Sisters Hormone Workshop not only helps women who are clinically menopausal, but also perimenopause gals transitioning into menopause. See the Workshops page for more information or book Dr. Amy for a Three Sisters Hormone Workshop now by completing the form.
